Rejoice fans of Mystery Science Theatre 3000! Fifteen years after the last episode aired, a reboot could arrive in the not too distant future. Well certainly before the year 3000 anyway.

Joel Hodgson, the show’s creator-writer-producer and host from 1988–1993, has told Wired that he plans to create an online version of the show. Originally broadcast on Comedy Central MST3K was cancelled after seven seasons but audience demand ensured the show’s survival until 1999 on the Sci-Fi Channel.

“I’ve talked to a bunch of fans about their lives and what MST3K means to them,” said Hodgson. “I’m overwhelmed by how people took to that show. It really affected them. I thought, if enough people still love it, maybe we can bring it back.”

“Even avid viewers sometimes don’t realize that every major role in the show had been swapped out over time,” he said. “So in my mind, the show is built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas. It’s like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle as it applies to MST3K: If it doesn’t change, it’s not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies.”

For those of you unfamiliar with MST3K, the premise is very simple. An evil scientist forces his human prisoner and robot sidekicks to watch classic bad movies as a psychological experiment. In order to retain their sanity the prisoner and his robot companions provide a running commentary on each film, ridiculing its flaws, and wisecracking their way through each reel, like a cosmic Waldorf and Statler.

Expect the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 online invasion this spring.
