Proof at last that the world has, indeed, gone quite mad. Disturbing rumours reach Starburst Towers that the Red Production Company (whose previous credits include British TV hits Last Tango in Halifax, Scott and Bailey and…umm…Pat and Cabbage), which has acquired the rights to Studio Canal’s back catalogue is seriously - without joking - considering the possibility of turning Robin Hardy’s 1973 cult classic masterpiece The Wicker Man into an ongoing TV series. Red’s MD Andrew Critchley recently told Broadcast that The Wicker Man is “one of the films we’re looking at.” Frankly, Andrew, we’re fine with that; everyone should “look at” The Wicker Man but no-one should be considering turning it into a TV series (much less remake it - hang your head in shame, Neil LaBute). Far be it for Starburst to stifle the flame of creativity (and we appreciate that Russell T Davies sharpened his TV teeth with Red on Queer as Folk and the later Bob and Rose) but we sincerely hope that this is one misbegotten idea which dies a grisly death as soon as possible. Possibly by burning in an effigy of some sort….
