TV News: Moffat Confirms DOCTOR WHO Series 9

TV News

In news so unsurprising that it wasn't even announced by Zoe Ball, showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed, writing in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine, that there will be a DOCTOR WHO series 9, to be aired in 2015.

More interestingly, he's also clarified how this series will be structured. Talking about series 8, he said "We're not going to do splits, and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that. So it will be the traditional form." He must be hoping that by giving us one long run and not one split in the middle like what we've got for the past few years, he might be able to win back some of those dropping ratings.

Series 8, which introduces Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor alongside Jenna Coleman's Clara, began shooting this week and is expected to air in Autumn.

It would appear so. I have to say that, much as I'm not a fan of this particular era of the show, this talk of "falling ratings" is pretty much without foundation. 'The Day of the Doctor's final figure (without iPlayer viewings) was 12.8 million...making it not only no 1 shot for its week but also the top British TV drama ratings for the year! 'Time of the Doctor' at Christmas was watched by 11.14 (without iPlayer), third for its week. This show has enormous viewer loyalty no matter how shaky it might be. I hope Moffat is concentrating on creating an accessible, unfussy, exciting series which can maintain this ratings momentum...but what I'm hearing about the first few episodes just seems to suggest 'more of the same but with a different head on the Doctor.' We shall see.
