The success of Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ beloved modern day adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed sleuth Sherlock Holmes is elementary, dear reader. Admittedly the concept raised some concern back in 2010 but as soon as the inspired casting of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson was seen, audiences and critics fell in love. The series has faithfully transported the stories and their styles and discombobulated at times with some truly worthwhile puzzling cases. The casting has been delicious but the action has matched it. No more is this so, than in ‘that’ season 2 finale, The Reichenbach Fall

Viewers have waited since the series concluded on January 15th 2012 for an answer to how Sherlock did it (trying hard not spoil anything here but come come, you need to catch up!). What has been almost 2 years has felt like 5, but after being teased with photos, toys, a US Release date and most recently a new teaser trailer; fans can get their scarves and coats ready to venture back into an investigative adventure. As this morning a hearse perused the streets of London, exhibiting a message in flowers “Sherlock 01.01.14”. Spotted on Gower Street at 9:30am and teased last night by producer Sue Vurtue, this is the news we have all been dying (no point intended) to hear. The debut episode of the third series will be appropriately titled The Empty Hearse and will answer some questions. Also a new antagonist played by The Killing’s Lars Mikkelson will haunt Sherlock - Series 3, and if he matches Andrew Scott’s Moriarty, we are in for a ride.

So there it is readers, Sherlock Lives and is (sher)locked in for a UK airdate on BBC One, New Year’s Day.
