The BBC have announced that filming has begun on the second series of BBC3’s award-nominated ‘zombie’ drama In The Flesh following the screening of the acclaimed initial three-part mini-series earlier this year. The series, created and written by Dominic Mitchell (recent recipient of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brit title) takes us to a battered Britain recovering from the ravages of an ‘undead’ uprising and the attempts of the undead who have survived and have been treated for their condition - suffering from PDS (Partially Deceased Syndrome) but referred to as ‘rotters‘ - to reintegrate into their shattered communities. Series two, running to six episodes, returns viewers to the bleak Northern town of Roarton where a fragile peace exists between the living and the ‘undead’. Keiren Walker (Luke Newberry) is trying to remain under the radar whilst planning to escape from his own suspicious community. But beyond Roarton trouble is brewing. The radical ‘Pro-Living’ Party Victus is gaining power within the Government with a resulting spate of PDS terrorism linked to the so-called Undead Liberation Army. When new and explosive characters representing both Victus and the ULA arrive in Roarton, Keiren finds that his plans are thrown into disarray as both parties set their sights on him and he finds himself caught in an emotional crossfire.

Returning to the series alongside Luke Newberry are Emily Bevan as Keiren’s friend/fellow zombie Amy, Harriet Cains as his feisty sister Jem, Kenneth Cranham as Vicar Oddie, Kevin Sutton as Gary and Steve Cooper and Marie Critchley as Keiren’s parents Steve and Sue. New cast members include Wunmi Mosaku (Dancing on the Edge) as local MP Maxine Martin and Emmett J Scanlan (The Fall, Hollyoaks) as charismatic disciple of the Undead Prophet Simon.

Dominic Mitchell says: “Returning to Roarton has been a real joy, revisiting old characters and inventing new ones, entangling their lives and their loves. My hope is that In the Flesh series 2 will have something for everyone: with high octane genre thrills running alongside emotional, hard-hitting domestic drama with plenty of black humour.” BBC 3 Controller Zai Bennett adds: “I am excited that BBC3 viewers will once again have the chance to immerse themselves in Dominic’s intricate world, which brings such realism to the scenario of medicated zombies being reintegrated into the community. The popularity of season one is testament to the strength of the cast, production team and the conviction with which Dominic writes.”

Production began on series two of In the Flesh on October 7th in and around the North West of England. The series is expected to debut early in 2014.
