TV News: DOCTOR WHO's Hugo reign broken!

TV News

As you’re a discerning reader of Starburst, you’ll no doubt be familiar with The Hugo Awards (it’s like the Oscars celebrating the best in sci-fi and fantasy but without the angst, the tears, or Billy Crystal), and this year’s event was held at LoneStarCon 3 in San Antonio, Texas.

Like the Oscars, there are various categories that awards are given for, one being 'Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form'. For the past three years, Doctor Who has had the honour of claiming this award as it did in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009 the British sci-fi drama’s winning streak was broken by Joss Whedon's online series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

It could be coincidence but, after another three years, Doctor Who’s claim on the 'Short Form' award has been taken by HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones with its acclaimed season two episode 'Blackwater'.

Accompanied by series star Rory McCann who plays Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane, Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin graciously accepted the award.

Three Who episodes - 'Asylum of the Daleks', 'The Angels Take Manhattan' and 'The Snowmen' - were nominated in this year's awards, alongside the winning Game of Thrones entry and the Fringe episode 'Letters of Transit'.

Looking at the pattern that seems to have emerged, however, Doctor Who should win in 2014, 2015 and 2016, with the 2017 award going to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or the reboot of The Man from Atlantis. Hey, a reboot's bound to happen sooner or later.

It's hardly a surprise as Doctor Who's just not been on form the last year or so. None of the nominated episodes really amount to much and certainly none of them are potential award-winners.

Blackwater was better TV than the three DW episodes listed, so it deserved the win (in my opinion as a lifelong DW fan). Perhaps the problem was the low number of DW episodes from which to choose - in which case DW fans should be prepared to lose again next year, and every year following in which Mr Moffat (or any other showrunner) fails to get a whole 13-14 episode series out in a year.
