Thought J.J. Abrams might pump the brakes on adding new projects to his slate since he undertook the colossal task of bringing STAR WARS back to our screens? Think again! The filmmaker’s latest project will see him re-team with Jonah Nolan (PERSON OF INTEREST creator and brother of Chris) to reboot Michael Crichton’s WESTWORLD for the small screen. For those unfamiliar with the 1973 original, its sequel FUTUREWORLD (1976) and the 5-episode TV series BEYOND WESTWORLD (1980), it tells the tale of the Delos Corporation, a company that specializes in adults-only theme parks populated with super realistic, human-looking robots. Vacationers choose one of several types of ‘world’ to visit – ‘Westworld’ is based on the American old west – and can live out any fantasy they like without consequence. Naturally most of these ‘fantasies’ revolve around sex and violence, because, y’know, we’re human beings. But hey, they’re only robots after all, they’re not going to mind being abused! Well… most of the time anyway. Like Crichton’s later novel, JURASSIC PARK, things at the theme park go tits-up quite quickly.

“A dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin,” is how the new series is being described, making HBO take notice and commission a pilot. The ever-busy Abrams will only be handling producer duties, naturally, with the series coming under his Bad Robot production banner (very apt actually). Nolan will direct the pilot, writing alongside Lisa Joy (PUSHING DAISIES).

Expect more news soon…
