TV News: BBC To Announce New DOCTOR WHO Already?! [Updated] With 3 Candidates...

Written by J. R. Southall Friday, 07 June 2013

TV News

alt

It seems the succession might be rather more rapid than anyone anticipated.

Sources have indicated that a Sunday newspaper is intending to scoop the BBC by announcing the name of the new Doctor this weekend. And in order to pre-empt the scoop, the BBC look set to announce the name tomorrow evening, just a single short week since the announcement of Matt Smith’s departure, and hardly time enough for that bombshell of a news story to sink in.

The name of the actor in question is still a mystery (as is the gender...), although the source indicated that a photo shoot with the lucky new TARDIS tenant has already been completed. One thing we do know is, early contender Ben Daniels is definitely not in the frame.

Here at Starburst, we have no idea how true this story is, but the next 24 hours look sure to be interesting for those following developments on Twitter...

[UPDATE]

Starburst's sources have now come up with three names, apparently the front-runners in the bidding to be the new Doctor. Whether it's one of these three that has in fact been chosen to play the part, we cannot be sure. We can't really be sure that these three are in the running at all - but that's what we've been told! One thing that's guaranteed, however, is that this new "information" will get people talking!

The three names are: Domhnall GleesonDaniel Kaluuya, and Dominic Cooper (click each for more background).

Let us know what you think of these choices in the comments below.

I haven't seen any of these actors, but just based off appearance-- it would be great to have a POC doctor, but he's always wanted to be ginger.

That being said, choose whoever's best, and not what people commenting on the internet say.

Hands down it should be Domhnall Gleeson. Dominic is definitely good looking but he doesn't have that years of guilt ridden angst look to him. I think Gleeson would be brilliant!

I believe the new Doctor should be Domhnall Gleeson. He would be the best, and plus he is a ginger.

Toby Stephens for a sexy, more mature Doctor. And he's a great actor. He can play it with gravitas or humor, whatever is required. Plus he's a bit of a swashbuckler which would be fun.

i think gleeson is a good choice, or kaluuya. more so gleeson, a ginger doctor, though as a ginger myself am biased. though i wouldn't mind a colored doctor, considering all 12 doctors so far have been Caucasian. but i don't like cooper, he doesn't seem like the doctor to me.

"Coloured"? Seriously? Where do you come from.... 1962?

Domhnall Gleeson would bring to the show the uniqueness and quirkiness it needs. I don't think we need another pretty boy (not that Matt Smith wasn't great), and I reckon Gleeson will be a great Doctor!

I vote for Dominic Cooper, although I don't know Gleeson well so I can't say he'd be a bad DW. I think Dominic Cooper can pull off the brilliant and "unique" doctor.

And the Telegraph are claiming it's been offered to someone, although it's not one of the three names we were given:

I think of these options, Domhnall Gleeson is the only one that would suit the role of The Doctor AT ALL! He is one of my top 2 choices, the other being Jamie Dornan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Dornan)

Really, I just want people to stop with the rumours, and the BBC to pick who I tell them to!!

Please keep up with the Original Theme, and choose someone who isn't well known... A Fresh Face! That's what makes Doctor Who so wonderful... it's unexpected and as one Whovian wrote on Facebooks Doctor who's group page... We fall in love with the New (Unknown) Doctor Who all over again. Casting the roll with an actor who has already been in other shows, has a tendecy to cause the viewers to see the Doctor as "That Other" character on the "Other" television show. Fresh Is Best! This is not only my opinion, but I've read many others, and they have the same views as well.

Thank you,
Serenity Grace
Whovian!

Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant were VERY well known actors when the were chosen to play the Doctor...

In that they are talking balls.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who since the very first episode was aired (I'm in my mid-50's). I've liked most of the Doctors, but absolutely hate Matt Smith! After reading this all I can say is that if any of these actors are chosen I will stop watching the series for good!
The Doctor shouldn't be played by kids for a start (I count these actors as kids), but more importantly, the series has already lost many of it's older fans lately, & if they do not do something drastic, & instead go for more of the same, they will lose much more of their fan base.
Give us an actor that many viewers have seen, & not just actors seen in cult SF & fantasy.

I agree about the black Doctor. Yes, River was black for awhile, but she wasn't the Doctor and there wasn't much story line surrounding that regeneration. My vote is for the Ginger!

Personally I don't think the doctor should be black. I'm not racist or think he would be a bad Doctor its just that the Doctor has always been white and I think it should remain that way because that is how it has been for 11 doctors

but if the doctor is black it wouldn't stop me watching the show. :D

both Domhnall Gleeson and Dominic Cooper have films set in pre production mode right now (IMDB) but Kaluuya has nothing on the horizon... maybe that says something.I'd love to see a black Doctor, it'd be a great change to the show.

they actually wont be filming the next season until early next year late this year for i think an august release.

I would like to see Domhnall Gleeson or Dominic Cooper because I am familiar with them. And Cooper has played with Clara before so I think that would be Fantastic. If neither bring Matt Smith back lol

I do believe there should be a good change though. so I vote Domhnall Gleeson. A hair color change isn't too bad

River was black once, so I don't see why we couldn't have a black Doctor.

Best combo would be a ginger and black Doctor!

If it was Gleeson then technically Mad-Eye Moody would be the Doctor's dad!

The Doctor did pretend to be Mad-Eye Moody once.
