Although neither the show or its stars have been nominated in any of this year’s actual award categories, BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) will be acknowledging Doctor Who’s forthcoming fiftieth anniversary at its annual red carpet ceremony this coming Sunday (12th May). Starburst Magazine understands that there will be a special video tribute to the series to, in the words of BAFTA’s Chief Executive Amanda Berry, recognise the show’s “ability to put the nation on their sofas - or indeed behind them - year after year.” She added that BAFTA “raises a toast to the series on its fiftieth birthday.”

Actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays the Doctor’s on-off current travelling companion Clara Oswin, will be in attendance at the event and will present an award during the ceremony. Two Daleks will also be patrolling the red carpet as the guests arrive; the mind boggles at the (Z) list of potentially well-deserved extermination targets likely to be striking poses for the camera on the night in search of a cheap photo opportunity.

The BAFTA Awards, hosted by Graham Norton, will be screened on BBC1 from 8pm on Sunday 12th May.

I hear reports that John Hurt will be playing a previous unknown incarnation of The Doctor in the anniversary special.
