TV News

With the much-anticipated Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special now entering production in South Wales, details are at last begin to filter out about exactly who (in every sense of the word) from the show’s long history will be returning to join the celebrations. The show’s fandom has been buzzing with rumour and speculation for months - probably even years - but it’s now official that David Tennant (the tenth Doctor, 2005 - 2010) will be returning to the episode alongside iconic 21st century companion Billie Piper as Rose Tyler (2005 -10). Legendary film and TV actor John Hurt is also said to be part of the cast of the sixty-minute special episode. As-yet-unconfirmed rumours suggest that ninth Doctor actor Christopher Eccleston, whose success in the role when the show returned in 2005 ensured its continuation, will not now be returning to the show despite positive negotiations to secure his participation and that he has now been replaced by eighth Doctor actor Paul McGann who played the role in just one ninety-minute US-made TV movie in 1996 (although he has gone on to successfully develop his promising portrayal in the Big Finish audio range).

Starburst will be all-eyes-and-ears for more news from the Doctor Who set.

The seventh season of Doctor Who has now resumed on BBC1 on Saturday nights, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara. The anniversary special will be broadcast in November.
