Considering its ongoing huge success in both the United States, were it posts enormous viewing figures for AMC, and the UK, where it scores well on the FX Channel, it’s hardly surprising news but we’re pleased to be able to confirm that zombie drama The Walking Dead is now officially renewed for a fourth season for broadcast late in 2013.

Perhaps more surprising is the news that showrunner Glen Mazzara, who has helmed the series since original executive producer Frank Darabont was “let go” at the end of season one, is now also bowing out. Whilst Mazzara’s own official statement is typically non-committal - “I have told the stories I wanted to tell… it doesn’t get much better than that” AMC’s own statement ominously hints at yet more behind-the-scenes unrest on the show. Says the Network: “Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways.” Mazzara helped The Walking Dead weather the storm of criticism about the sluggish pace of the (ultimately rewarding) second season and through the much edgier, brutal current third season so we’re intrigued to find out who’ll be drafted in to replace him and, hopefully, keep the show’s stellar current momentum going into a fourth year.

Season three of The Walking Dead resumes in February 2013 in the USA and the UK.
