In a genre mash-up more bizarre even than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, it appears that Enid Blyton's almost-impossibly dated Famous Five - that's Julian, Dick, George (she's a girl!), Anne (so's she) and Timmy the dog, don't pretend you don't remember them - are on their way back to TV.
But breathe easy, this won't be some creaky 1950s period piece full of bullies and scoundrels and lashings of ginger beer; it seems that the new Famous Five (that's Julian, Dick...oh never mind) will actually be hip happening 21st century kids undoubtedly equipped with iPods and iPads and apps and all the other paraphernalia which makes modern youngsters so smug. The twist here will be that the Five will now be time travellers, finding themselves slipping back to the 1950s where they'll involve themselves with...well, bullies, scoundrels and lashings of ginger beer I'd have thought.
This new series is the latest venture from UK-based Kindle Entertainment with the co-operation of Hachette who control the late Blyton's estate. The show, shortly to be on the lookout for funding from any potentially-interested broadcaster, has already been likened to ITV's well-remembered (by much, much, much older readers) 1969/7O children's classic Timeslip which told of two teenagers able to travel back to the recent past and then on to the near future.
The Famous Five?? Coming back to TV? As time-travellers?? Starburst says hoorah, this could be jolly good fun for the hols!
