Last summer it was announced that Guillermo Del Toro was developing a new TV series based on Marvel’s The Hulk. We always found it a little odd that anybody would attempt yet another incarnation of the character after one failed movie in 2003, a moderately successful Edward Norton pseudo-reboot, and, especially, as a little film called THE AVENGERS (you might have heard of it) was already on the way featuring Mark Ruffolo in the role.
After the barn-storming box office success of said film, and Ruffolo’s performance, it would surely be inconceivable now that a studio would want to further confuse fans by doing an alternate version, but no, seems the TV show is very much still in active development. Just to be clear, if this project was following Marvel Studios’ movieverse interpretation, then we’d be doing cartwheels (or whatever the geek equivalent to a cartwheel is, we're not a limber bunch are we). Considering what an amazing job Marvel Sudios did creating a unified world over the course of just 5 movies, imagine the potential to expand upon that with 12 (or more) episode runs! Sadly, we just can’t see Ruffolo being involved, given that his recent 6-picture contract with Marvel Studios didn’t mention television at all. Marvel head Kevin Feige has also remained schtum on the subject.
That said, it must be pointed out that ABC, the company that today announced that the show was still “in development”, are a subsidiary with Disney, who ultimately own Marvel Studios, there’s the tiniest chance Ruffola could be persuaded. Time will tell, but it would be a damn shame to jeopardize the character again with a reboot so soon after they discovered the key to tapping into his popularity and translating the character successfully from page to screen…
