TV News: SPACE 1999 To Be 'Reimagined' As SPACE 2099...

TV News

'70s sci-fi show SPACE: 1999 is the latest property to be eyed up for the remake treatment, with ITV Studios America and HDFilms announcing that a new take on the series - titled SPACE: 2099* - is now in the development stage.

Jace Hall, HDFilms president, was also responsible for the short-lived V reboot a few years back, and is looking to bring Gerry Anderson's fondly remembered show back to screens for a 21st Century audience. Hope he has more success this time around.

No network is in place as on yet, so consider this far from a done deal, but as always we'll keep you in the loop...

*Erm, considering how fast SPACE: 1999 dated, shouldn't these guys play it safe and chuck another decade or two on there? As it stands this only gives us 87 years to get ourselves all moonbased-up, otherwise this is going to look bobbins all over again. NASA better get a wriggle on!

Would you like to see them have another crack at this, or is the show best left as is? Share your thoughts with fellow readers in the Comments below or on Twitter @Starburst_Mag

Second, when they do remakes, or the more current term, "reimagining", they don't respect the original. I don't know if its a disdain for the original, the fans, something else, or an arrogance that they think they can do better. (If they can do better, why can't they come up with their own show instead of piggybacking on an old one??) Battlestar Galactica, for example. So little remained of the original, why not call it something else? It didn't pull me over, but it might have if it had been something else. I tried the first year, but I couldn't get past, "This IS NOT Battlestar." It was like ordering a filet mignon and getting a hospital cafeteria hamburger. One is beef, and another supposed to be beef.

Leave Space: 1999 alone.

I think it should be left alone.

First, why doesn't Hollywood have any originality? Why do they think they have to remake EVERYTHING??? If the current people in Hollywood were there back in the beginning of TV/FILM, we'd have only had remakes of Shakespeare, and how many times by now?

Reminds me of the 2099 Marvel comic book range. Conceptually, it could work, but I'm not holding my breath.

They surely can't call it Space: 2099, it's a hideously clunky mouthful. Go with Moonbase Alpha (or better yet, Moonbase Alpha On The Move) and be done with it!

And we all know how well the Thunderbirds movie turned out; Bill Paxton and his boy band. Damn you for ruining my childhood, Johnathon Frakes! They even kicked Gerry Anderson off the set! This is another attempt to have creatively bankrupt Hollywood cash in on someone elses brainchild and ruin it. Keep your remake virus to yourself Hollywood. Don't infect the UK. Bloody Yanks!

It's about time! Space: 1999 was so High Concept and, done right, has amazing potential for a really great sci-fi show chronicling the adventures of Moonbase Alpha and its denizens struggling to survive all alone in space whilst encountering new alien life. The future can still be fantastic!
