Well, this is certainly something we didn’t see coming. Yes, as the title suggests, the BBC are remaking Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic The Birds.

Hitchcock’s famed 1963 movie is being adapted into a contemporary TV drama that will actually be a little more faithful to Daphne de Maurier’s 1952 novel than Hitchock’s film was. By that, we mean that the series will be set in rural Cornwall as opposed to the California locale seen in the movie. There, the focus will be on a farmhand and his community as they become targeted and terrorized by a flock of birds and seagulls. Time-wise, this will be set shortly after the end of World War II.

Heyday Television – who are owned by Harry Potter producer David Heyman – are producing the show, with Conor McPherson, who actually adapted the source for a 2009 stage play, on writing duties.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.
