In some great news, the BBC is developing a new version of The World of the Words.

This news comes as the Beeb announced that it’s ordered eleven new “high-end dramas”, with a new three-part take on H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds being the one that will grab the attention of most genre fans.

For this new adaptation, it will actually be set in the Victorian era and be written by Peter Harness – no stranger to genre fans due to his work in adapting Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell for the BBC in addition to penning several Doctor Who outings. Even at this early stage, this new take is already being pegged as the most faithful adaptation of Wells’ beloved work to date.

The last we’d heard on any new incarnation of The War of the Worlds was about 18 months ago now, when it was revealed that Mammoth Screen were looking to develop a new take on this iconic property.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Wells’ 1898 novel has been adapted, with a Gene Berry-starring 1953 effort and a Tom Cruise-fronted 2005 movie both instantly springing to mind, not to mention musical incarnations.

Expect more on this new take on a true sci-fi classic as and when we get it.
