It’s been confirmed that the compelling sci-fi drama Humans will return for a third season in 2018.

The first season attracted spectacular Sunday night viewing figures on Channel 4 in the UK – the first episode, screened in June 2015, pulled in an impressive 6.81 million viewers and subsequent episodes rated well over 5 million with only the final pair of episodes dipping underneath the 5 million mark. The second series, airing in the more competitive Autumn months, saw a considerable drop in interest with its first episode appealing to 3.40 million viewers with numbers declining across the series, frequently falling below 2 million but rallying to just over 2 million for the finale screened on December 18th, 2016.

Fans of the drama, written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and based on the award-winning Swedish drama Real Humans, feared that Channel 4 (who co-produce the series with AMC in the USA) might pull the plug on plans for a proposed third season. Fortunately, common sense has prevailed and the commissioning of the third series of eight episodes was announced yesterday.

“‘Humans” provides a thrilling look at the evolution of technology and its effect on society,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and Sundance TV. “The critical response to season two celebrates the creative vision, dynamic story-telling and compelling portrayals shared by the writers, producers and actors. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Channel 4 and Kudos and look forward to season three.”

Humans is set on a ‘parallel’ Earth where humanity exists side-by-side with alarmingly-lifelike synthetic ‘servants’ known as ‘synths’ and stars Gemma Chan, Colin Morgan, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill and Emily Berrington, and its first and second season guest-starred William Hurt and Carrie-Anne Moss, respectively. The third season will film later this year and air in a hopefully more-sympathetic timeslot in 2018.
