In terms of characters who’ve had multiple incarnations and new takes over the years, there are very few who can top Dracula. And now comes word that this famed horror icon is being adapted for a new TV series.

As reported by Variety, Nick Wechsler and Joni Sigvatsson are coming together to produce a show titled Dracula Now, which will be a contemporary Gothic drama series that pulls inspiration from Powers of Darkness, itself a 1900 political and edgy reworking of Bram Stoker’s famed novel by Makt Myrkranna.

This new show is currently set for 10 episodes and will be set in the present day, and the early word is that the titular Drac will be depicted as a seductive, manipulative megalomaniac from Transylvania who is looking to take control of all of Europe.

On this news, Scanbox’s Sighvatsson said, “Dracula Now will be an allegory of what’s happening today in the US, in the UK, and in France. It won’t be like a Dracula spinoff because there’s no need for that. Dracula Now will explore the idea of Dracula as a dictator forging a reign of blood to control people in today’s world.”

Screenwriter Otto Geir Borg, best known for 2010’s Undercurrent, has been brought in to write the series.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
