Kevin Smith to Direct SUPERGIRL; New Cast Members Announced

TV News

In some awesome news, it’s been revealed that Kevin Smith will be helming an episode of Supergirl during the Maid of Might’s second season.

Smith won a whole host of praise for The Runaway Dinosaur, the episode of The Flash that he directed last season, and whilst we’ve known the iconic writer/director was to return to handle the Scarlet Speedster once more during The Flash’s third season, we can now add Supergirl to his credits as well.

No details are known at this early stage on just what number episode of Season 2 Smith will be directing, although it appears that the episode in question may well have a tedious link to the Superman Lives movie that never happened. Smith famously penned one of the many screenplays for the Tim Burton-directed, Nicolas Cage-starring Superman movie that infamously fell apart and never came to be.

On this news, Smith himself took to his Facebook page with the below statement:

You will believe a man can cry! Ecstatic to be directing an episode of @supergirlcw this season! Fell in hardcore love with the show, the heartfelt @melissabenoist portrayal of Kara Zor El, and the excellent use of‪#‎jonnjonzz, the ‪#‎martianmanhunter from @dccomics. Just like they did with the @cwtheflash, @andrewkreisberg & @gberlanti (and @aliadler) have crafted an incredibly human show about a person with superhuman abilities. ‪#‎Supergirl depicts family warmth so well, watching season 1 made me feel like I missed out on life by not being a girl who was best friends with my adoptive sister. I cannot wait to head back up to ‪#‎Vancouver in October (after returning for another episode with my beloved Central City family of filmmakers from ‪#‎TheFlash in September) to find out how the incredible cast & crew of this show I adore make such an engaging and emotionally satisfying hour of storytelling every week. But there's bittersweet poetry to this Super gig: 20 years ago, I wrote a script for a movie called ‪#‎Superman Lives - a Superman reboot that never got off the ground (see the brilliant documentary ‪#‎thedeathofsupermanlives by @jonschnepp for the full story). The other day, my own personal superhero ‪#‎andrewkreisberg told me something in an email that made me roll a tear: it has nothing to do with the actual plot of my episode, but they titled the script for the one I'm directing "Supergirl Lives." Only way any of this gets better would be if Kara has to fight a giant spider (or "Thanagarian Snare Beast") in the 3rd act... Big thanks to everyone at Berlanti and ‪#‎theCW for letting me come play in their super sandbox. Blood (and love) bonds us all... ‪#‎kevinsmith ‪#‎gregberlanti ‪#‎aliadler#supergirl ‪#‎cw ‪#‎cwsupergirlseason2 ‪#‎grateful ‪#‎supergirlcw ‪#‎dccomics

To us, having good ol' Kev Smith involved in any and all DC-based shows in any way possible is always a great move. From showing off his comic book routes loud-and-proud from the moment he made his mark with movies like Clerks and Mallrats, Smith has shown over the decades that he knows the comic book industry and its characters like the back of his hand. More importantly than that, though, he gets it; he understands what makes these characters special and appealing, and his passion and emotion are as genuine and sincere as you can get.

Additionally, in other Supergirl news, CBR has word that the series has cast Chris Wood as Mon-El and Sharon Leal as Miss Martian for its second season. With both of these characters being comic book heroes in their own right, it looks as if Melissa Benoist’s Girl of Steel will have more than just Martian Manhunter and Superman to help her out this season.

Supergirl returns to US screens on October 10th, with a UK return to follow shortly after. Season 1 of the show was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, and you can find our review of that here.
