In some great news for fans of IDW’s Locke & Key, it’s been announced that the multi-award-winning comic book series is being developed into a TV series. Not only that, but creator Joe Hill is also on board to pen the pilot and executive produce the series.

IDW Entertainment broke the news, with IDW’s Ted Adams and David Ozer and Circle of Confusions’ David Alpert and Rick Jacobs also serving as executive producers alongside Hill.

Plot-wise, the Locke & Key franchise is based on the Locke family and the fantastical and eerie Keyhouse, a mansion whose very doors transform any who walk through them, whilst the home also houses a hate-filled creature who wishes to cause nothing but chaos. As well as being created and written by Joe Hill, the series features art from Gabriel Rodriguez.

On this news, Hill himself said, “I love this story. The seven years I spent working on Locke & Key was the happiest creative experience of my life and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen and to see if we can’t scare the pants off viewers everywhere.”

IDW Entertainment President David Ozer added, “Having Joe at the helm of the pilot ensures that the series will hold true to the brand that fans around the world have come to love. Locke & Key is a true global franchise.”

Rather than developing the show as merely a pilot at this stage, IDW is actually moving forward with developing Locke & Key as a full series. This isn’t the first time that the property was being eyed for the small screen, with FOX having previously given such a show a series order before that fell apart. Additionally, there was even talk of a movie adaptation at one point in time.
