It was only a week or so ago that The CW confirmed a pilot order for Riverdale, a take on the classic Archie books, and now comes the first official casting for the show.

The Wrap reports that Surviving Jack’s Lili Reinhart and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’s Cole Sprouse have joined the show as Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones, respectively. To those familiar with Archie, you’ll know all about these two characters, but for those not aware…

For Riverdale, Betty is described as “Sweet, studios and eager-to-please. The wholesome Betty has a huge crush on her long-time best friend, Archie. Tired of being the perfect daughter, student, sister, etc, she turns to her new friend, Veronica, for life advice – much to the consternation of her emotionally brittle mother.”

As for Jughead, this slightly tweaked version of the character is described as “An emo heartthrob with a philosophical bent, Jughead is the former best friend of Archie Andrews; he is still smarting from the rift that took place between the two.” Now, to give you an idea of what this pair look like in the funny books, here's a quick picture (complete with ever-so casual sexism):

The one-hour pilot is being written by Archie Comics’ Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and is to be produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions. The plan is, of course, that a full series will follow should the pilot do as well as expected.
