New TV Adaptation of Neil Gaiman's NEVERWHERE Announced

A new TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere has been announced, to be made by The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence and producer Mark Gordon (Reaper, Criminal Minds).

The story of Neverwhere sees young businessman Richard Mayhew stop on the street to help an injured girl named Door, and in doing so becomes erased from the everyday world of London Above and must descend into the darkly fantastical world of London Below to get his life back and uncover who murdered Door’s family. Along the way they team up with flamboyant rogue the Marquis de Carabas and stoic warrior Hunter, while being relentlessly hounded by assassins Croup and Vandemar.

Originating as a six-part BBC TV series in 1996, alongside which the novel was concurrently written, Neverwhere has also appeared as a comic book, a stage play and radio play, as well as a now-abandoned movie version.

Although budgetary constraints meant its effects were unable to realise the original vision for the story, hopefully the renaissance that TV is currently enjoying will mean the availability of enough funding to truly match Gaiman’s phantasmagorical imagination.
