TORCHWOOD’s Catherine Tregenna joins DOCTOR WHO Series Nine

The recent series of DOCTOR WHO may have added several new writers to its roster, but one criticism continually leveled against the series is its lack of female writers. That may be about to change, as Welsh playwright and screenwriter Catherine Tregenna is, according to her online CV, penning an episode for next year’s Series Nine.

Tregenna isn’t entirely new to the Whoniverse – from 2006 to 2008, she wrote four episodes of spin-off TORCHWOOD, including Hugo award-nominated ‘Captain Jack Harkness’. This news would, however, make her the first woman to write for the Doctor since Helen Raynor’s contribution to Series Four back in 2008.

Do keep in mind that Tregenna writing a script doesn’t necessarily mean her episode will make it into the series, as the BBC commission more scripts than they shoot (did you know Stephen Fry wrote an unfilmed Series Two episode?). Nevertheless, this is a good sign that showrunner Steven Moffat is working to address his team’s gender imbalance, and is continuing to pick up talented new writers – no doubt a good move, after scripts from Jamie Mathieson and Peter Harness gave fresh new takes on the Time Lord towards the end of Series Eight.

DOCTOR WHO Series Nine is expected to air next autumn. In the meantime, look out for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor teaming up with Santa himself, on BBC One this Christmas Day.
