News: Has The HIGHLANDER Reboot Landed a New Director?

Written by Animal Johns Monday, 12 September 2011

Movie News

As previously reported, the HIGHLANDER reboot has been in development for some time now, but today it moves a little closer to actuality with the news that 28 WEEKS LATER director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in talks to helm.

Fresnadillo will take over the project from the FAST & FURIOUS franchise's main man Justin Lin (is there a single sequel/reboot he’s not attached to?) who recently decided to step down as director.

The script Lin helped develop was written by IRON MAN writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, and was subsequently re-written by Melissa Rosenberg (of TWILIGHT. Yikes!), but  with Fresnadillo now on board we expect the screenplay to undergo further changes.

Will these be for the best? We won’t know for a long while off yet, but we’re more encouraged by Fresnadillo’s presence on the picture than Lin.  After all, 28 WEEKS LATER showed much promise from the director (and it’s arguably better than DAYS in my opinion) and Lin is… well, Lin. While he can certainly deliver in the action stakes, HIGHLANDER demands more.

Still, after six movies and two TV shows, do we really need more? Or will a reboot allow some much needed cleaning up of the increasingly fumbled mythology and return it to its original roots?

Summit films were originally aiming for a 2012 release. But that’s looking a little optimistic at this late stage.
