First there was the announcement back in ’06 that it was to be directed by Frank Zappa’s son Ahmet. That came out of leftfield.
Then HOODWINKED writer/director Cory Edwards was hired to develop the movie in 2008, but left last year citing creative differences - "The only overall note coming from the studio is this: 'Not edgy enough.”
*spit take*
Edgy enough?! Yeah, “creative differences” might have been a bit of an understatement that time. (Though the show did originally air on HBO, so maybe I'm remembering it wrong…)
Well seems they've finally found a solution to their lack of Fraggle edge - they've hired the 'Scissor Sisters'. Naturally.
Band members Jake Shears and Babydaddy are now reportedly providing music for the movie, which will see Gobo, Red, Mokey, and Boober journeying into Outer Space* for the first time (is Uncle Traveling Matt in trouble perhap?!)
Whether the creative might of the Scissor Sisters will be enough to rescue this project from Development Hell seems slim, its fate more likely resting on this year’s big-screen MUPPET comeback.
* Outer Space was the Fraggles’ name for anything beyond their Rock - which I was devastated to learn as a kid ‘wasn’t’ located under a Lighthouse other than in the UK version. Turns out every country had their own specific wraparound segments filmed for that particular foreign territory. Hence we get Damien from Brookside as Sprokett’s owner when the US got a nice floppy-haired old bloke. I feel betrayed by the Henson Corporation for destroying the canon at such an early stage.
THE MUPPET MOVIE is out this Christmas (watch the teaser trailers here).
Seasons 1 & 2 of FRAGGLE ROCK are available to buy now.
