R.I.P. Philip Madoc 1934 - 2012

Actor Philip Madoc has died at the age of 77.

Most famous for his role in The Life and Times of David Lloyd George for the BBC in 1981, to genre fans the world over he will forever be remembered for his roles in Doctor Who, most significantly as Solon in the 1976 story The Brain of Morbius. He also appeared with Bernard Cribbins and Peter Cushing in the 1966 film Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD.

As well as an early, career-enhancing role in The Last of the Mohicans – again for the BBC, in 1971 – as Magua, Madoc appeared in any number of other productions throughout a long and active career, including comedies such as Porridge, Dad’s Army and The Good Life, and dramas like Survivors and Target. His genre appearances also encompassed such series as Space: 1999, UFO and a number of appearances in The Avengers. His most recent mainstream television role had been in Midsomer Murders in 2007.

Born in Merthyr Tydfil on the 5th of July 1934, Madoc died after a short illness, leaving behind two children with his former wife, Ruth Madoc, and five grandchildren.

There have been a lot of sad passings recently. For some reason, this one got me the most. Between them, I must have seen his appearances in Morbius and the Dalek film about two dozen times! He was a great actor - an underrated one, too - and he's a huge loss to the industry.
