Movie News: PIRANHA 3DD Update (turns out the extra 'D' stands for Direct-to-DVD)

Written by Kris Heys Friday, 30 December 2011

Movie News

Bad news for any UK fans looking forward to John Gulager's upcoming sequel to 2010's PIRANHA 3D, it's no longer getting a cinema release. Gutted.

While there's been no official word yet from makers Dimension, the British Video Association have the movie listed as being 'pulled from schedule' and will now unceremoniously debut on DVD/Blu-ray March 19th.

So what went wrong? Until we hear from the studio or the filmmakers themselves, your guess is as good as ours, but bearing in mind that the movie was previously moved from its original release date of November 2011 to an unspecified 2012 slot, alarm bells were already ringing that all things were not right in the 3DD camp.

While not being a huge fan of Alexandre Aja's original (always thought it reeked of missed opportunity personally), we were eager to see Gulager and his regular collaborators Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton bring the energy of their FEAST movies to the fishy franchise. It would appear they've not been too successful if the studio is willing to take a bath on a huge 3D-only money-spinner like this.

Here's that first teaser trailer again so you can see what you would have seen on the big-screen. Looked perfectly fine to us!

As for the US theatrical release, no news as of yet but we'll keep you in the loop...
