Movie News: Colin Firth Offered OLDBOY Villain Role

Written by Chris Holt Saturday, 12 November 2011

Movie News

Like it or not, the OLDBOY remake is happening. It could be in worse hands than Spike Lee’s though and for that at least we should be grateful. Watching films like INSIDE MAN, THE 25TH HOUR and CLOCKERS it feels very much like Lee is an inspired choice who can do stylish and grimy in his sleep.

After the rumours that Christian Bale was ‘in talks’ to take the villain role (known as Adrian in this version), Twitch is now reporting that Colin Firth is in talks for the lead. Firth has had one hell of a year with the success of THE KINGS SPEECH giving his career a massive boot in the arse. He followed that up with the acclaimed TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY playing a very slimy character. If anything Firth probably needs to get out of his comfort zone and stop playing royalty and charmingly befuddled brits and start dirtying up his image some. If this role is essentially faithful to the original film then this could definitely be the film to do this.

Josh Brolin is already cast in the Oh Dae-Su role and at this stage Firth has only been ‘offered’ the part. Interestingly enough Firth was cast as the lead in original OLDBOY director Chan Wook Park’s American directorial debut STOKER due out in 2012 but had to drop out due to scheduling issues…
