Movie News: Joss Whedon Reveals Secret Movie... [Updated] With Press Release

Written by Kris Heys Monday, 24 October 2011

Movie News

Well nobody saw this coming! We've always known Joss Whedon has a super-human work ethic, but how on Earth the writer/director has managed to pull this off leaves us stumped. Hasn't he been a tad busy on a certain little Marvel movie due next May?

Anyway, seems he was somehow able to make a secret new movie based on Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (admittedly not very Starburst-y, but c'mon - it's Whedon), starring a whole host of his BUFFY/ANGEL/FIREFLY/DOLLHOUSE alum.

What else do we know? Diddly, to be honest. All anyone has to go on at the moment is this poster, which @NathanFillion revealed on Twitter earlier today...

No doubt more details will start to drop over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

[UPDATE]

Actually, it turned out that Joss wasn't planning on leaving us hanging that long after all, for he's already spilled the beans in a breaking Press Release!

So, the movie IS a straight adaptation of the Bard's timeless classic, directed by Whedon, produced by himself and his wife Kai Cole, and shot in B&W in a mere 12 days!

The principal characters are portrayed by Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof as Beatrice and Benedick respectively.

Not sure why it escaped me earlier, but the fact that Joss is tackling Shakespeare should come as no surprise. I remember reading back in the halcyon days of BUFFY & ANGEL being in production, Whedon would hold weekly readings at his house that were attended by his cast & crew. It's especially heartening to see his choice of leads being Acker and Denisof, who at one-time were destined to appear in season 2 of FIREFLY as a travelling band of thesps (James Marsters rounding out the quartet) bringing Shakespeare to The 'Verse. While that never panned out (obviously), and the fact that, unfathomably, the two actors don't get near enough TV/Film work as they should, it's great to see them rewarded with a headlining gig in this project - which judging by the hoopla surrounding it today could very well go on to do huge things.

Anyway, for all the deets you should check out the official site and read the Press Release in full. Sounds fascinating.

[END OF UPDATE]

For info on WASTELANDERS, yet another Whedon project that was announced a few days ago, go here. And let's not forget the long-held-back CABIN IN THE WOODS, here. Oh, and THE AVENGERS, here. When does the dude sleep?!
