News: ATTACK THE BLOCKS? Possible Sequel, TV Show, and/or Remake on the Way

Written by Kris Heys Monday, 17 October 2011

Movie News

Director Joe Cornish has revealed that we might not have seen the last of the plucky inner city yoofs who saved us all from world dominance at the furry paws of those neon-toothed alien bastards we saw in his cult hit ATTACK THE BLOCK.

Talking with IFC, Cornish not only revealed that he has been approached by Hollywood with a proposed remake (surprise, surprise), but there's also chance of a sequel and/or a TV show.

So where would Joe go with a follow-up? Apparently star John Boyega (leader of the pack Moses) has a few ideas he's been pitching to his boss...

"He has this image of a bigger alien attack on London", Cornish says, "as if the attack we saw in 'Attack the Block' was just the first wave and there's another wave of bigger creatures. And he described to me this image of Moses leading a whole army of hood kids across the Thames, next to the houses of Parliament. He had an image of Moses on a police horse. You know the police in London who have those horses they use in riots... somehow Moses has got onto one of those horses. So he's on a horse leading this army of South London kids across the river to take on this bigger wave of aliens. So yeah it's really fun to think of stuff like that and what we could do."

"We've had approaches for a remake and a sequel. We've had approaches for a TV show to spin off it. But it's very early days, you know. So it's not out of the question but very early days, and I'd certainly like to do something different for my next thing if I get a chance to do a next thing."

With a very healthy box-office take both in the UK and overseas, coupled with almost universal praise, I shouldn't imagine Cornish will have any trouble getting the financing for whichever project he choses to concentrate on next.

Would you like to see more ATTACK THE BLOCK, or is it best served as a one-off cult classic? Would anybody like to see it remade for a US audience? Share your thoughts in the Comments below or on Twitter @Starburst_Mag

it'd be fascinating to see how a US remake plays to the americans who loved this movie. maybe if you take away the adorable (incomprehensib le?) brit accents, americans will be less able to relate to a bunch of kids who mug women at knifepoint.
