ATLANTIS Season 2, Episode 4 'The Marriage of True Minds'

PrintE-mail Written by Tony Jones

The Marriage of True Minds, by Lucy Watkins, follows on from the events of the lacklustre Telemon and takes the main characters out of Atlantis and sends them to Aegina. The idea is that Ariadne (Aiysha Hart) wants to meet Telemon’s (Clive Standen) father, ahead of their marriage. We soon learn that Pasiphae (Sarah Parish) is back and Telemon is her agent. Jason (Jack Donnelly) can (or so he and Ariadne think) never be wed but he still travels to help defend her from whatever befalls her.

The bulk of the story is linear – Telemon betrays their route, there is a bloody ambush and almost everyone killed except for Ariadne, Jason, Hercules (Mark Addy), Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and Dion (Vincent Regan). The plot gives little for most of the characters to do but there is plenty of fighting and even Ariadne has developed previously unknown skills as an archer. She also manages to lose half her clothing in the desert for ‘plot reasons’. It is worth mentioning that the acting is strong and Hart in particular manages a lot more of a performance than she was allowed in the first season. Sarah Parish, of course, still dominates any scene in which she appears.

Battling back towards safety the group meet Orpheus (Ronald Pickup), a blind–man travelling with a small group of apparently ordinary people. This gives an interlude for Ariadne to explore her feelings towards Jason.

The action progresses and the heroes have to seek safety in a cave. Hercules points out that caves are becoming somewhat of a feature of their lives and this cave has its own challenges – it is a necropolis. Just as the story builds to a climax there is an unexpected turn of events, a shuffling of characters, some tragedy, and the realisation that we have to wait for next week to find out what happens next.

Overall, a much better episode than Telemon; it has some flaws but the storytelling is much better as is the direction and the action.
