In what has to be one of the most esoteric announcements of a computer game to film adaptation for at least a year, a movie is to go into production based on TETRIS, the three decade-old, frustrating, satisfying, crack-addictive puzzle game.

The film will be developed by Threshold Entertainment’s Larry Kasanoff, who has a mixed bag of credits to his name, producing the various big and small screen iterations of MORTAL KOMBAT, TRUE LIES, STRANGE DAYS, CLASS OF 1999 and the Christopher Lambert-starring BEOWULF. He stated that "It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie," and that “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.

Henk Rogers, Managing Director of The Tetris Company, stated that, “What started as a simple computer puzzle game 30 years ago, today is part of our global consciousness, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds and feeding our innate desire to create order out of chaos.” A fairly deep analysis of a game where you move tumbling tetrominoes back and forth across a screen and attempt to efficiently stack them into unbroken horizontal ranks. “In this new universe, as you’ll soon find out, there’s much more to TETRIS than simply clearing lines.”

Although we may have once agreed that no good can come from what at first glance appears to be a cynical cash grab fuelled by ‘80s nostalgia, that was eight months ago; then THE LEGO MOVIE came out and silenced all naysayers with its pure awesomeness. Also, while a TETRIS movie might sound like the daftest idea since BATTLESHIP (that game’s cameo role in BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY shall forever remain the high point of its cinematic career), this short film based on, we shit you not, PAC-MAN shows that with enough imagination, creativity and ingenuity you can create something awe-inspiring out of the most basic of source material. And let’s face it, however TETRIS turns out it can’t be any worse than BLOODRAYNE.

Although a story for TETRIS is apparently in place, no actual plot details have yet been forthcoming, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated when they are.
