Matt Damon Set to Return to the BOURNE Franchise?

Movie News

Ever since 2007’s THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, there’s been talk of a further Matt Damon-starring BOURNE film. Since then, the franchise went in a different direction with 2012’s THE BOURNE LEGACY, with Jeremy Renner taking the lead as Aaron Cross in that entry in the series. At the last word, Universal Pictures were moving ahead with a sequel to Renner’s movie. Now comes news that Renner’s follow-up could be getting shelved to make way for another Damon effort.

Deadline is reporting that Universal is talking to both Damon and director Paul Greengrass about another Jason Bourne-headed movie. Greengrass had previously said that there was nowhere to go creatively with another Jason Bourne film due to the character having regained his memory the last time we saw him. This new news says that the return of Jason Bourne is moving forward at such a pace that it may be given the July 15th, 2016 release date that was pencilled in for the Renner-starring sequel.

Given how the last Damon BOURNE film, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, took home $443 million compared to Renner’s THE BOURNE LEGACY’s $276 million, it’s easy to see why Universal would be so keen to get Damon back into the fold.

Expect more on this as it develops.
