In terms of remakes, reboots, redoes, reimaginings, etc, there’s few we want to see less than the long-discussed remake of John Carpenter’s classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. Sadly for us (and seemingly for most of you), this latest rework seems to finally be moving along. At one point, Tom Hardy was the apparent frontrunner to take on the iconic Snake Plissken role made so famous by Kurt Russell. Now comes word from Starlog on who currently heads the shortlist of actors being considered to take over the eye patch.

The latest word is that Silver Pictures have narrowed their Snake-hunt down to three names – THE WALKING DEAD’s Jon Bernthal, THE GUEST’s Dan Stevens, and SONS OF ANARCHY’s Charlie Hunnam, shown left to right in the above image. It’s presumed that Hunnam is the current favourite for the role, although his involvement may be hindered by PACIFIC RIM 2. The report goes on to claim that an offer will be made to the studio’s top choice any day now, although it’s added that none of the three names have read for the role at this stage.

Additionally, it’s said that this redo won’t be so much about just Snake, with the report claiming the film will be “more team-based, as Snake Plissken traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President.” This team will be made up Mina, a warzone journalist who has been framed for murder; Gareth, the last surviving part of the President’s security operation; and The Brain, a former partner of Plissken’s. It’s also said that parts of Snake’s past will be glimpsed throughout the film to show he is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It goes without saying, but treat this all as a rumour for now. Or even better, let’s just hope this whole idea is just a bad dream…
