Vampires may very well have had one tooth in the mainstream for decades, though bloodsuckers have been big business since the mind-boggling success of the TWILIGHT novels and the subsequent movies. With vampires on TV, the big screen, comics and video games, it looks as though they’re here to stay and, for many, Anne Rice’s series THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES offered something more esoteric, more explorative and more interesting.

Two novels of her sprawling series have been adapted into films: Neil Jordan’s cult INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE and the painfully average QUEEN OF THE DAMNED. Universal Pictures had been planning a third starring Robert Downey Jr. as The Vampire Lestat. No, we can’t see it either.

The Wrap has reported that Universal has acquired to Rice’s THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES for Brian Glazer and Imagine Entertainment. Roberto Orci (also behind the upcoming Star Trek 3) and Alex Kurtzman (himself involved in penning the script of the first two JJ Abrams Trek films) set to produce. While no details have yet been released regarding which of the eleven novels the team are set to adapt, it’s looking likely that Universal is going to build up a franchise. Whether this will tie in to their plan to resurrect the classic Universal Monsters remains to be seen.
