Movie News: WARCRAFT to Wrap in June

Movie News

Movies based on video games rarely, if ever, work. The two drastically different mediums are worlds apart and, despite the interactive film pretentions of titles like Heavy Rain and LA Noir, it’s often better they exist in independent spheres.

On paper a World of Warcraft movie sounds ludicrous. How on earth can the sprawling lore, characters and imaginings of Blizzard’s love-it-or-loathe-it universe be capture in a few hours of film? It could be the franchise’s death rattle, or a genuine artistic and wondrous expression of all that makes/made WoW great. Duncan Jones, the gifted director behind the subtle, explorative and beautiful Moon is behind the camera, after all.

Although the movie won’t be revealed to the public until March 2016, filming wraps up in June. Jones has recently posted on Twitter ‘For those counting down with me, we're done shooting Warcraft in three weeks as of tomorrow! Holy shnikey...’

It’s hard to get excited or indeed cynical about the Warcraft movie as there’s little to nothing to base an opinion on. It won’t be long before a glut of stills and footage are released and then we can see just what Jones is made of.

When it comes to WoW there’s no shortage of storylines, and Warcraft concerns itself with humans vs. orcs (what else?), focusing on the battle between Durotan and Lothar. It’s a blend of live-action and CG, trying to find the space between Avatar and Game of Thrones. Will you be rushing out to a cinema come March 2016?
