X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits cinemas next month. Whilst rumours are rife of potential solo spin-off films for the likes of Mystique, Gambit, and Deadpool, one movie is already confirmed as happening: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Until now, the plot details of APOCALYPSE have been relatively hazy. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg have been teasing what we can expect to see from the 2016 release.

Given how the X-MEN cinematic timeline has varied from the comic books so drastically at times, Singer discussed how APOCALYPSE may differ from the classic AGE OF APOCALYPSE comic book arc. “The movie won’t necessarily create an alternate universe,” he said, “but there may be some swapping of things that I’m playing with.”

Kinberg chimed in, “From a visual standpoint it actually may be a bigger movie than DAYS OF FUTURE PAST because there’ll be disaster movie imagery. Like the title would imply.”

On whether the finale of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will directly lead to the events of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, Singer explained, “You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it sets up APOCALYPSE. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in APOCALYPSE is that events in this movie made that happen. APOCALYPSE deals with ancient mutancy. What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You’re dealing with Gods and things like that. And what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world?”

Singer went on to confirm that the narrative of APOCALYPSE will follow the younger cast members of the X-world, such as Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast. It also appears likely that younger versions of other mutants, such as Gambit and Nightcrawler, will appear. On this topic, Singer teased, “I’m excited because I want to start introducing familiar characters at different ages and also explore the ‘80s.”

So to break all that down, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will be set in the ‘80s, with the younger cast that were first introduced in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, and will look to bring in younger versions of other familiar mutants. Just how this version of the AGE OF APOCALYPSE storyline plays out on the big screen is to be seen.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is currently scheduled for a 27th May, 2016 release, whilst X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will be released on 23rd May this year.
