Movie News: BANANAMAN Movie Coming Soon!

Movie News

The Man of Peel is coming to take on the Man of Steel! A thoroughly British hero has appeared to challenge the upstart American vigilantes who are currently dominating the silver screen. Move over Superman, Batman and Ironman, because Bananaman is on his way.  Or more likely, make us giggle, as in true UK style, Bananaman is a thoroughly silly hero who has always poked fun at the poe-faced comic books from across the pond.

At the moment, all we have is a stirring theme tune and the message #PeelThePower on the website The theme tune is reminiscent of the classic and uplifting John Williams Superman instrumental and the anarchic and fun Bananaman theme tune. Details are scarce, but the website is owned by Scottish publisher DC Thomson and the Elstree Studios logo is on the website, so we’re reasonably convinced that it’s genuine.

DC Thomson are responsible for fun and light hearted comic books such as The Dandy and The Beano and Bananaman first appeared in the pages of the now long gone Nutty comic before eventually flying over to The Dandy to cause havoc. The strip follows the adventures of ordinary schoolboy Eric who lives at 29 Acacia Road. When he eats a banana he transforms into Bananaman, who can fly, has the strength of 20 men (twenty BIG men) and is invulnerable to damage and oblivious to sarcasm.  At the height of his popularity in the mid-eighties the character even had his own animated television series, voiced by those infamous specialists of surreal comedy,The Goodies.

Bananaman has always been a light-hearted parody of mainstream comic books, and with superhero movies being big news at the moment our fingers are firmly crossed that this will be a perfectly pitched parody of overly serious features such as Man of Steel that is fun for all the family, and not another bland British children’s movie.
