Long before Zack Snyder gave the world his adaptation of Watchmenmaverick visionary Terry Gilliam took a stab at it and, according to legendary producer Joel Silver, Gilliam's interpretation would have been a "much better movie".

In an interview with Coming Soon, Silver says that Snyder was, "a slave to the material.” He also explains how the conclusion to Gilliam’s version would have had Dr Manhattan being convinced by Ozymandias to travel back in time and prevent his own creation, which would have caused an event that would only allow the surviving characters to exist within a comic book.

Gilliam decided to abandon the adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark series, saying that it was "unfilmable".

Would Gilliam’s version have worked? It looks as though this is one item that will have to be filed in the “What if…?” category.

Gilliam's latest film The Zero Theorem opens on March 14th.
