Not content with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST on the way later this year – not to mention X-FORCE next year – 20th Century Fox took the surprising move of closing out 2013 by announcing X-MEN: APOCALYPSE for 2016. Picking up after the events of Bryan Singer’s DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, it was believed that Singer would be back to direct APOCALYPSE. Speaking to EW, the writer/producer/director has been giving an update on just where X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is at right now.

Singer said that he’s “co-writing the story and I’m producing it. I’m negotiating to direct. We’re in the process. We’re trying to figure it out, schedules. My desire would be to direct it.”

So that ‘given’ of Singer directing is not quite confirmed just yet, although we’d expect that to likely be a mere formality.

Moving on to the plot of APOCALYPSE, Singer added, “It will also address historical mutant-cy, meaning the deep past, mutant origins and things like that. It’s something that’s always intrigued me when we think about out Gods and our history and miracles and powers.”

We’re pretty sure that Singer just created a new word with ‘mutant-cy,’ but it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the character of Apocalypse and just how much they touch on the powerful villain’s ancient Egyptian origins.

But not to get ahead of ourselves, because first up is X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (which Singer definitely is directing) on 23rd May. Following on from that, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (which Singer definitely might be directing) is currently scheduled for a 27th May, 2016 release.
