If you’re one of those people that gets easily offended by remakes, prepare to start gnawing your fist.

It’s been announced by the guys over at The Wrap that Kim Jee-Woon’s truly stunning I SAW THE DEVIL is to be the latest Asian classic to fall victim to the glossy Hollywood bastardisation, also known as a remake.

1984 Private Defense Contractors have purchased the rights to the US version, with 1984’s Adi Shankar saying, “Kim Jee-Woon’s I SAW THE DEVIL is perfect in so many ways. The intention is not to remake the film per se, but rather to ‘port’ it for international audiences.”

Here’s a novel idea: how about, rather than ‘port’ it, you maybe look to promote the original film in the US market and have faith in the brilliance of the movie to translate its language, tone and storytelling to a universal audience? Just an idea, Adi.

The concept of I SAW THE DEVIL centres on a special agent hunting down a serial killer that tortured and butchered his fiancé. Both parties endure their own share of brutality along the story’s path, as the film develops into a twisted cat-and-mouse game.

Just in the last decade or so, there’s been the likes of RINGU, DARK WATER, THE EYE, SHUTTER, JU ON: THE GRUDGE and OLD BOY that have had the remake treatment.

Expect more on this as it develops.
