It’s been announced that James Cameron’s AVATAR franchise will film its upcoming sequels in New Zealand. Yes, we said sequels as AVATAR 2, 3 and 4 have all previously been confirmed.

The $412 million deal will see the production receive a 25% rebate on all NZ spends, and Cameron & Co will be tied to producing a New Zealand-focussed featurette for inclusion on the sequel’s DVD and Blu-ray release, not to mention having at least one red carpet premiere in the country. In conjunction with this, the director has been talking to The Associated Press about what we can expect to see from said sequels.

Cameron said, “It’s going to be a lot of new imagery and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora. We’re blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”

Responding to rumours of AVATAR 2 focusing on life in the oceans of Pandora, he said, “There’s a fair bit of underwater stuff. It’s been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That’s not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.”

The director then went on to add that the sequels will also look to elaborate on the Pandora ‘family’ of Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully. “It was very Jake-centric,” Cameron said of the first film. “His story seen through his eyes. We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It’s really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like THE GODFATHER.”

Can we expect to see horses’ heads turning up in the beds of Pandora? Who knows…

At this point in time, AVATAR 2 is looking at a December 2016 release, AVATAR 3 a December 2017 release and AVATAR 4, you guessed it, a December 2018 release.
