Movie News: Fox Eyeing Big-Screen Version of Mark Millar's STARLIGHT

Movie News

It may not see its print debut until March next year, but Mark Millar’s new comic book mini-series STARLIGHT has reportedly already been picked up for development by 20th Century Fox.

The sci-fi story centres around a Flash Gordon-esque space adventurer named Duke McQueen, who returned to Earth to find nobody quite believed in his tales of daring-do. Many years later, McQueen is called out of retirement to go on one last mission when he receives a mysterious message.

The book, which Millar describes as “Buzz Lightyear meets UNFORGIVEN”, is the beginning of the shared Millarworld Universe proper, which sees all subsequent titles tie-in in some way. With Fox involved we’d expect the movies to follow suit, as studios desperately chase the Marvel Studios formula.

Simon Kinberg is reportedly onboard to shepherd STARLIGHT, adding to his many high-profile producing gigs including STAR WARS (new trilogy, standalone projects 'and' REBELS) and the Fox Marvel Movieverse (X-MEN, X-FORCE, FANTASTIC FOUR).

Other Millar properties in various stages of development include THE SECRET SERVICE (due March 2015), KINDERGARTON HEROES, and NEMESIS.

I just got issue #1 of STARLIGHT and rather enjoyed it. I can't wait for it to really get going but thus far our main protaganist is a likeable, if slightly tragic figure, the writing is nicely paced and the artwork is beautiful. May it run and run and make my issue #1 worth big "Bucks" in years to come. ("Bucks" like money and like "Buck Rogers in years to come"... see what I did? Did you? DID YOU?!?!?!?!)
