With THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 released in the UK next April, Sony Pictures have already confirmed that we will be getting third and fourth instalments in Marc Webb’s Spidey franchise. Speaking to Yahoo!, star Andrew Garfield has revealed that he may not be returning for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4.

Garfield said, “I mean, I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.

When asked about how THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is going to differ from Webb’s original film, the actor responded, “I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much as we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air; how can we reintroduce the character; how do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, ‘Who is this guy? How can we best serve Spider-Man?”

So, at present, Garfield isn't actually signed on for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4? Not to worry too much, as there's plenty of time for negotiations to take place. Still, it's interesting that Sony made the ballsy/stupid move to announce four Spider-Man films but that they have only actually got their Peter Parker signed on for three films. Clever planning...

The official synopsis for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 reads:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a great conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

We lucky UK folks get the film on 18th April, 2014.
