Movie News

During a recent talk with Variety, Charles Roven let a little more information out on the much anticipated MAN OF STEEL sequel. While also producing the first of Zack Snyder’s Superman flicks, he has been involved with all three films in Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. So he certainly has some DCU movie experience under his belt.

As any producer of a box office hit would say, Roven starts by praising the MAN OF STEEL’s vision of Superman: “We felt that we accomplished our goals with MAN OF STEEL,” he says. “Our intention was to bring Superman into the 21st century with a contemporary character and a different kind of superhero than what’s out there right now.”

But perhaps most interestingly is his views on Ben Affleck playing Batman and what the accomplished actor will bring to the table: “We had a sketch of an idea, the beats of a story that David Goyer worked on with Zack,” Roven says. “We have a first draft, and we’re continuing to work with it. Those scripts are never fully finished until the movie is in the theaters. We love the characters — we think that Ben is going to be a really great and interesting Batman.”

There was a little bit of internet uproar when Affleck was announced, but since then we’ve had a few Batman related announcements which fuel either side of the debate. One of the major news stories in recent times was Kevin Smith's love of the new Bat Suit. The suit is sure to link in with the new vision of the Caped Crusader’s older more experienced look, with many assuming a Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” style being adopted. Roven certainly fuels the fire for this with the reasons he gives for Warner Brothers going straight for Affleck as Batman.

“We wanted a guy who had a certain age and a certain gravitas to what he had done in terms of his recent work,” Roven says. “If you take a look at THE TOWN and ARGO, he plays a couple of serious guys in those movies. He’s a big man. He’s also a mature man. As you see him and Henry together, one definitely has much more experience just by looking at him. That’s what we wanted, particularly juxtaposed against our Superman.”

As always the Bat fans eat up every bit of information given, even if it confirms their doubts or confidence in how The Dark Knight will be presented in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN.

Charles Roven is currently also preparing for WARCRAFT, based on the on role playing game WORLD OF WARCRAFT directed by Duncan Jones (MOON), which is bound to be another highly anticipated and highly scrutinized film the successful producer is involved with.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN opens July 17th 2015. WARCRAFT is currently scheduled for December 18th 2015 (but expect that to change very soon).
