News: Stephen King's THE STAND Finally Heading To The Big Screen

Movie News

In news that will surely have Ron Howard tearing out his hair feeling pretty annoyed, Warner Bros have announced they are to go forward on a multi-film adaptation of Stephen King's THE STAND. Why should Richie Cunningham be pissed you ask? Well he's just had his big-screen multi-film adaptation of Stephen King's THE DARK TOWER cruelly kiboshed over at Universal (after working on it for what seems like years). Poor guy.

So, THE STAND. Those unfamiliar with King's epic novel, it tells the tale of a group of survivors who must band together after 99% of the planet's population is killed off by a mysterious virus. It's been attempted before of course, with ABC's 1994 mini-series, but many believe it didn't come close to doing the source material justice.

Warner Bros have tasked their HARRY POTTER go-to-guys David Yates (ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, HALF BLOOD PRINCE, DEATHLY HALLOWS PARTS 1 & 2) and writer Steve Kloves (all of them!) to bring the story to our screens.

It's nice timing for King fans let down by Universal's decision to bail on THE DARK TOWER. But we doubt Mr Howard is jumping for joy right now.

It's sure to be a long wait for THE STAND however, with it unlikely to hit our cinemas anytime before 2013. In the meantime, we can enjoy several other lower key King projects that are currently in production, including TV adaptations of UNDER THE DOME and BAG OF BONES, as well as the (somewhat less encouraging) PET SEMATARY and CARRIE remakes.

Looking forward to seeing THE STAND done right? Does it make up for the loss of Howard's THE DARK TOWER? Let us know with your comments below!

If it departs as much from the source material as Stanley Kubrick's take on a Stephen King book (I avoid use of the word "novel" deliberately...), then it stands (no pun intended) every chance of being great.

Love a little post-apocalyptic thriller, I do. Now, any more news about Warner's DVD release of No Blade of Grass which was supposedly due this year...?

New ideas would really be appreciated, but it looks like the well is running dry. All these remakes are just telling of how bad people are at being creative with results these days. It seems remaking and remaking is the only way they can make money.

I hope this concept is done correctly for the big screen, because it could be great.
