James Cameron’s Avatar stands as the highest grossing film ever (unadjusted for inflation) and like it or not, it made waves in the film industry. Whether you are in the tribe that considers Avatar a masterpiece of spectacle cinema or whether you see it as Pocahontas with blue giants, there is no stopping James Cameron from developing his world. To that end, we see the extent of those developments with this recent shooting schedule.

In a radio interview with Nova 96.9, Sam Worthington confirmed that they “are going to start this time next year and we will do two, three and four”. The actor can be trusted more than most, due to his standing with, what is soon to be, the Avatar franchise. Plot details are obviously being kept alongside the unobtanium but there are bits of information out there. The main one being that Avatar 2 will use underwater motion-capture technology and take place mostly in that environment. Indeed Cameron is far from a stranger to that area of filming, what with his 1989 film The Abyss and his documentary work on Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron and Aliens of the Deep as well as producing 3D Thriller Sanctum.

James Cameron has crafted many defining cinematic experiences over his career but with Avatar has made his own world and, while polarising in part, it is a vastly profitable one. One wonders however, just how painstaking this yearlong 3-film shoot will be. However, considering the release schedule, a sequel every December from 2016-2018, this strategy is a rather wise move. More details will undoubtedly surface from the Pandoran seas but until then we can only wait and see what next digital advancements the pioneering filmmaker will showcase to audiences. Should these sequels work as well as the first film did, then by part 5 we may just be eating with a Na’vi leader in his tree house.
