Movie News

An Evil Dead sequel has seemingly been in the works forever, with an awful lot of umming and erring but no solid confirmations. It is not exactly hard to see why it may have taken so long, Sam Raimi has been sawing up the competition with his Spider-Man trilogy, Oz: The Great and Powerful and even departed from big budgets to make personal efforts like Drag Me To Hell. So news has been very speculative and unconfirmed for years until now, as B-Movie icon and keeper of the acclaimed chin, Bruce Campbell, may have just confirmed that the Army of Darkness sequel is going ahead.

Though generally considered inferior to the first two films in the Evil Dead trilogy, 1992’s Army of Darkness has lingered long in the memory of its avid fanbase. The fantasy Horror was indeed the Evil Dead series’ full stop, until this year’s interesting remake/reboot that suggested a link (not least because of a juicy post-credits scene). According to, Campbell confirmed the long-gestating sequel in a Q&A at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con.

When asked whether a sequel to Sam Raimi’s third Evil Dead movie [Army of Darkness] was going ahead, Campbell responded initially in jokey terms, saying, “The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I used to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here." The actor continued to joke about his age and how it would play out in the film, stating, “Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it”.

So far, so unanswered, until the actor got a little more serious, answering, “Alright sir, the answer is yes”. Naturally many have leaped on this like the undead on a thick bit of leg but it is important to note that this is not an official announcement. Campbell’s return as the chainsaw-handed Ash has been rumoured for years, not only in an Army of Darkness sequel but also in many projects from a Freddy vs. Jason spin-off (if a spin-off to a spin-off is now a thing) to a sequel to this year’s Evil Dead. We await official confirmation and any news of Sam Raimi returning to direct but this is one of the first solid indications that an Army of Darkness sequel is or at least could be happening, some time in the near future. We’ll raise a boom stick to that!
