Movie News: SHIVERS up Next for the Remake Treatment

Movie News

Just when you thought we were running out of horror classics to remake, David Cronenberg’s SHIVERS is getting the rejig treatment. Deadline is reporting that the legendary director’s 1975 film, which was his first feature-length film, is to be produced through TAJJ Media and Bunk 11 Pictures. Denmark’s Rie Rasmussen is on board to direct, with Ian Driscoll penning the script. Casting is apparently already underway.

The original film was set in an idyllic luxury resort, which is taken over by remarkably turd-looking parasites. These parasites pass from person-to-person, with their host becoming extremely violent and extremely horny. Yes, like a vengeful Katie Price, people would go on a slaying and shagging rampage. Attempting to stop all of this is the resident doctor, but it soon becomes apparent that the increasing group of violent nymphos may be too much to handle.

Reports claims that the remake will look to modernise certain aspects of Cronenberg’s film, with the Deadline story claiming, “The new SHIVERS will be updated for today’s social and sexual realities. In a post-HIV world, where people interact through screens rather than skin, the parasite breaks down those digital barriers. This is a world that is both more liberated than that of 1975, and more fearful and uptight.”

Whilst we’re usually not a fan of remakes, and we are fans of SHIVERS, the original has certainly not dated that well in terms of appealing to a modern audience. We’re more than happy sticking with the original SHIVERS, although it could be interesting to see what a new take brings to the story.

Expect more on this as it develops.
