Movie News: First Trailer Hits for ROBOCOP Reboot

Movie News

It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for, folks. Since those worrying first set pics debuted a year ago sent fans of the property into a frenzy of vitriol (understandable; the redesign looked bloody awful), we’ve waited with baited breath to see actual footage from Sony’s controversial reboot (not that there’s any other kind) of Paul Verhoeven’s ROBOCOP. The one previous teaser impressed, but was designed as peripheral viral material only – today (a few weeks after the movie was initially meant to debut) we get to see the whole trailer. And pleasingly, they don’t skimp! This is a pretty packed promo, featuring not only the Robo re-design that caused so much hate, but those variations hinted at later (we’d link to that story, but ‘the powers that be’ made us remove it a long time ago!), including one that looks very much like the Alex Murphy we were first introduced to in 1987. But that said… in motion, that black suit actually looks pretty damn badass! Could we all have been wrong? Judging by this trailer, it’s a distinct possibility.

Check it out in the player below and please share your thoughts in the comments; we want to hear where everybody's at with this. Enjoy…

Official Synopsis:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front.

Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life.

He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak.

ROBOCOP is currently scheduled to hit the streets February 2014.

Ooh... I'd been really worried about this, as I really, really love the original, but something about this trailer is making me think it might not be so bad after all. The combination of Sam Jackson's silly hairdo and the bit about free will, I think. I just hope it doesn't take itself too seriously - the original works so well because of its satirical edge, with scenes like the Nukem advert.

Phht. How did a Mech from Fallng Skies get in there?? Remakes, remakes, remakes. They'll be remaking Stargate next! Oh.

After a great deal of mocking of the production photos, I'm willing to eat my words and say this looks rather good... then again, trailers always do.
It perhaps lacks the "nastiness" of the original by looking super sleek, but still, I'll buy that for a dollar!
